Arctic industrial and circular economy cluster

The Circular Economy Centre heads the industrial circular economy cluster in smart specialisation in Lapland. The cluster is a part of the regional development programme of the EU. This is an established working method regarding the development of European regions.

Working in clusters is common in the EU. The Arctic industrial and circular economy cluster was granted the ECEI Silver Label for its high-quality work, as verified in an audit.

What is smart specialisation?

Regions (regions in Finland, in this case Lapland) recognise their existing strengths and areas of special expertise.
These will be moulded into a regional strategy for smart specialisation.
Development funding will be allocated for strengths recognised on the basis of the strategy.
The objective is to use development funding more efficiently and therefore better promote business life in Lapland.
In Lapland, multidisciplinary Arctic expertise is considered as a strength instead of individual fields of business. Recognised strengths in Lapland include the mining and metal industries, bioeconomy, tourism and the related fields of business.

What does this mean in practice?

Clusters, or networks, have been established to promote various fields of industry. The members of these networks include companies in the field, relevant authorities, educational institutes, research and development organisations and other public sector operators.
The objective of the clusters is to promote cooperation and the exchange of information between participants, which will generate growth and innovation opportunities for SMEs.
The Circular Economy Centre and Digipolis are in charge of the work of the industrial circular economy cluster in Lapland.
