Digipolis Research
In April 2004, the University of Oulu, Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland entered into an agreement to initiate co-operative research and development work related to technology and service provision in Kemi under the name Digipolis Research. Research Digipolis has a research director, management group, strategy, operational plan as well as shared personnel and equipment resources, which are all utilised in accordance with the requirements of specific situations so as to ensure optimal competence. The activities are guided and supervised by a steering group made up of representatives of Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences, the University of Oulu, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Digipolis Oy.
The activities of Digipolis Research are based on three regionally significant entities: the ICT cluster of Northern Finland, the region's strong and modern process industry, and the opportunities offered through the close proximity to Sweden. The activities are aimed at carrying out applied research and development projects in selected sectors to respond to the needs of companies. The principal research partners include the University of Oulu, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Luleå University of Technology in Sweden. The activities are closely linked to the education of the University of Applied Sciences, which enables for the provision of services to companies in the form of both research and new, competent personnel.
In 2008, Digipolis Research employed 48 people (35 person-years). The volume of the activities totalled 1.46 million euros. The funding is based primarily on project funding. The main sponsors were the Education Department of the State Provincial Office of Lapland, Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (Tekes), Interreg IIIA North, Kemin Digipolis Oy, individual companies, Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences, and the University of Oulu.
